The federal government has made a six-flag worthy announcement today: Two new appointments to help co-ordinate the anti-terror arrangements within the government and various security agencies.

Former ambassador to Indonesia and Iran Greg Moriarty has been named as the new anti-terrorism co-ordinator.

Former ambassador to Indonesia and Iran Greg Moriarty has been named as the new anti-terrorism co-ordinator.

He will be responsible for overseeing co-operation on terror threats between the different intelligence and security agencies such as the Australian Federal Police and ASIO.

"It is important that we stay ahead of this game," said Tony Abbott at a press conference on Monday. "It is important that we are constantly doing better, because our enemies are constantly striving to do more."

Justice minister Michael Keenan has a new job too, he'll be the minister assisting the prime minister for counter-terrorism.

Justice minister Michael Keenan has a new job too, he'll be the minister assisting the prime minister for counter-terrorism.

Keenan will be responsible for the $40m countering violent extremism (CVE) programs as well as overall counter-terrorism co-ordination with the prime minister's department.

The government says the CVE program is vitally important to stop more Australian teens from becoming radicalised.

Tony Abbott says his government has proved its ability to keep the commmunity safe "in the way we have stopped the boats" and by demonstrating "commitment to countering Islamist death cults."
