“It was in a bit of a flap,” a government special advisor told BuzzFeed News.
It was spotted by government special advisor Ramsay Jones, who told BuzzFeed News how the daring bird managed to breach Downing Street security.
"It probably flew," revealed Jones. "It could probably fly over the gates and the security – although Larry [the Downing Street cat] was nowhere to be seen, terrible eh?"
Jones said Downing Street staff, although having received no training for heron situations, dealt with the bird calmly and professionally.
"When I came back up the street the heron was in the door already, standing in the corner," he said. "Staff were just being very quiet round it, trying not to disturb it and making sure no one was thumping around. Then, with a flap of its wings, it went on top of the door, had a peek outside, then it went hop-hopping away."
Jones suspects the bird may have been taking refuge from an overly-aggressive crow spotted outside of the building, because "[the heron] was in a bit of a flap".
"It didn't lose any deposits on the floor though," he added.
"One day I'll have to do a popular tweet politics in it," he said.
